Papermen

The Delta Arts Center, May 2012

Kirouac's photo-based project Papermen raises compelling questions around what constitutes portraiture, who defines community and the value of the art object. Living in the Southern States since 2008, Kirouac began to observe a new community of newspaper 'hawkers' who sell the Winston-Salem Journal at certain intersections around the city. By engaging these men at their location, capturing them digitally, expanding this experience through a printing process that merges portrait subject and the object they sell, and displaying them in a white cube context, Kirouac challenges the temporary and cursory nature of their usual brush with the public.
